Can Someone Explain BlueSky to Me?

Posted by jthrash - October 19th, 2024

I've noticed a ton of announcements on my NG feed where people I follow or befriend here are announcing they're moving over to BlueSky. Now I'm well aware of Elon Musk's latest effort to scare away every last sane(-ish) user of the bloated corpse of Twitter, but personally I left Twitter long before Musk considered buying it (2021), and BlueSky often seems to be described as that version of Twitter, so admittedly I'm going to need some extra convincing to ever try a Twitter-like again.

Does it support video uploads up to two minutes long, like Twitter did? I want to do more animation and short cartoons after practicing making so many still images the past couple of years. How is the phone app? Admittedly, since I do a lot of 3D art on my phone during my breaks at work nowadays (technology can be amazing, sometimes!), it would be nice to have a more mobile-friendly website to post WIPs and quick projects to than Newgrounds.

Are the blocking features really that good? Maybe I was a bit lazy to fully explore Twitter's now-defunct blocking features, or too open-minded to the opinions of strangers/bots back then, but the main reason I left Twitter (and Facebook around the same time) was because checking such websites even on occasion and especially their oftentimes-political "Trending" tabs became too much for me. Seeing the excellent art from people that insisted on exclusively posting in a walled garden like Twitter was not worth being constantly reminded of EVERY stupid Internet "culture war" happening all around the world at any given moment. Either way, I think I should hold off on signing up for any social media website until the conclusion of the most recent US Election--the last day for in-person voting is November 5th, but in the supposedly-likely situation this election proves close, I might have to wait until mid-November until the dust settles, we know the final results, and the campaigning season is FINALLY over). The last thing my nervous wreck brain needs right now is MORE opinions thrown at my face.

Perhaps most importantly, is BlueSky REALLY filling a need I can't already get from posting on Newgrounds (my main hub), YouTube, (a more "mainstream" place to repost my Movie Portal submissions) and BlenderArtists (a forum that gets me more Blender 3D-specific help)?

Bluesky is another version of twitter, everything look the same except there's no micro transaction (well it was made by Twitter Ex-Employee) so no need to be worry about learning the social media again

(The following is more of my personal 'color-commentary' on the matter.)

Spoken from the perspective who didn't even create a Twitter account in the first place because I didn't think it was particularly useful, I'd say this is "just another RSS-feed combined with a popularity contest".

People who like that kind of stuff will try to replace their Twitter/"X"/"Xwitter" account with it - which has been "dead" for quite a while, but people love their inertia. ...and if they "had to" switch it would be like having to admit to making a "mistake", so they feel that they need to have an excuse. Like a mass-exodus. Basically every misstep from "Chairman Musk" would have cause this...

Personally, I view this as an opportunity to interview people for feedback, so I know if I should switch to recommending 'Bluesky' over 'Mastodon' ( https://mastodon.social/about )

Also: I think Elon Musk will just _buy_ Bluesky next and forcefully merge the services, if "X" becomes too unpopular. The man isn't exactly known for his originality. (It's imaginable that 'Bluesky Social, PBC'[?] was banking on such an outcome from the very start.)

Interesting...well, if I have lived without Twitter just fine for the past 3 years, then I could probably live without Twitter-likes such as BlueSky or Mastodon, as well.

@jthrash Sounds like a reasonable prediction to me. :)

My biggest assumption is that you will get many more non-artist eyes on your work. That seems like the biggest draw to me. NG is better in so many ways, but there aren’t as many international people coming here to spend time. It could be an excellent way to filter people elsewhere while being something you engage with others on. So it seems good for boosting visibility, I guess?

That's actually an excellent point. That's sort of the point of my YouTube channel, but YouTube's algorithm really isn't all that useful for animation channels. No wonder OneyNG eventually decided to do Let's Plays instead, he can put out videos more frequently that way than with inherently time-consuming animation.

For a similar reason, I would probably only post quick illustrations and 3D renders onto BlueSky if I decide to get an account. I can get those out more quickly, plus animation is an art where I should take as much time as I need to make it the best it can be (even if it means only posting like one or two Movie Portal submissions a year at best). That, and I heard BlueSky's video streaming capabilities aren't the best right now...

@jthrash that seems like pretty good content. I think I would only go just to interact with other artists outside of NG. Being able to respond to someone with a sketch seems pretty fun.
