Ask Me Things! Uncomfortable Things!

Posted by jthrash - 3 weeks ago

iu_1388564_7291833.webpSo right now I'm about 5 days into a nasty flu (not COVID-19, mercifully)--or as I like to call it, my "Biannual Reminder That I am But a Mere Mortal Who Shall Know Mine Insignificant Place." Can't really do anything remotely resembling work right now because it could prolong the time it takes me to recover, but at the same time I'm bored out of my mind the few times I'm awake right now, so now I thought it would be a good time to set up an AMA (Ask Me Anything) Blog post to pass the time.

Any burning questions weighing you down, lay it on me! You can ask me anything...ANYTHING! I will answer any time I happen to awake and on Newgrounds, until I feel all better and can go back to my day job + working on my next idea for a Punk n' Gunk cartoon episode!

...I will be rating this blog post "M for Mature," just in case.

what's your opinion on JFK? Do u know who killed him? (Btw, it sucks ass you're sick, hope u get better soon)

John F. Kennedy sounded like a pretty cool President back in the day, same with Jackie Kennedy as First Lady, they seemed like the "Barack and Michelle Obamas" of the 1960's (Obama was basically the only President in my lifetime so far to give me hope for this country).

I wasn't there when it happened, considering JFK's assassination happened about 30 years before I was even born, but I've been told Lee Harvey Oswald killed him. Either that, or a very disgruntled Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

what is your opinion on the national schism? my friends call it the national schizo

I had to look that up on the Internet and it was a long time ago (1910), so I can't say I have an informed opinion on that.

If it costs say 2 grand on average to save a child from dying of malaria, if you spend 2 grand on anything not necessary for your own survival that does not do an approximately equal amount of good, doesn't that make you somewhat complicit in a child's death?

I basically ask myself some variation of that question every time I upgrade my PC hardware. It's uncomfortable to think about, that the money I spend on basically any luxury to "treat myself" could have been spent to help others, so I try not to think about it too hard. Thankfully, I have been raised well enough to at least occasionally prioritize giving the money to others over my own temporary "retail therapy" when it's an issue near and dear to my own heart.

how much wood could a woochuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood

Probably only two, since they're little fellers.

how do i type

Through faith in the power of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, you can do all things. Even typing.

do you think the war on terror was a distraction so that the government can crash the stock market

Dammit, Jim, I'm just a guy who draws funny cartoons, not a CIA operative! How do you expect me to know any of this serious stuff??

@jthrash are you secretly saying that you are secretly a secret CIA agent

I am secretly saying that I am secretly a secret CIA agent that secretly doesn't know what the hell is secretly going on in secret half the time...secretly.

Curses! Rickrolled again!

whos that on ur banner

A caricature of me.

...Or are you talking about the Magic Monkey Head in the banner? Also a caricature of me.

If you had the power to control people's poop, what would you do?

Obviously I would combine the planet's poop supply to create an unstoppable army of Poop Titans to conquer and enslave the world under my big, brown thumb of terror.

OBVIOUSLY.

What is your opinion om the wong "Thick of it" by KSI?

Meh, give me back the OLD SCHOOL of rap. "NOW what you hear is not a test, I'm rappin' to the beat..."

(I am a monster: I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable or bore you further, but this question has been on my mind _a_lot_ these past few days - and I do not want to let this opportunity you presented us with go to waste. So here goes...)

As an artist and 'person on the internet', you probably used archive.org (the "Wayback Machine" and the "Internet Archive") before.

What do you usually use it for?
Or if that is an 'artist secret' of yours:
What was the most interesting thing you ever used the service for?

I'm asking in part because of a recent development:
Take Action: Defend the Internet Archive
https://blog.archive.org/2025/04/17/take-action-defend-the-internet-archive/

Quite honestly, not much. Sometimes to remind myself of the good ol' days when the early Internet was more lighthearted and not as much a right-wing corporate propaganda machine enslaved by ever-changing Google Ads qualifications. Sometimes to look up old media of characters that recently went into the public domain, such Whinnie the Pooh or Horace Horsecollar. Sometimes to watch "banned" stuff like Song of the South or that "Are You Feeling It Now Mr. Krabs" SpongeBob episode.

Mostly just to quickly play old console games up to the PS1 via their "WayBack Machine" emulator thingy, particularly games that were not properly released in the US like "PEPSIIIII-MAAAAAN!"

I signed the petition you linked to, by the way. This is hardly the first time the Internet Archive was threatened by lawyers who think the general preservation of stuff companies are too unmotivated to preserve themselves should be illegal, and it certainly won't be the last. Clearly I think EVERYTHING remotely historical should be preserved and easily accessible to the public, regardless whether the IP owners think it's worth the extra cost of re-releasing a notorious failure, or keeping the servers of, say, Concord up and running for historical posterity, and ideally it should not be trapped on physical media or digital servers that may cease to work one day. But at the same time, US copyright law is screwy and ultimately very much in favor of rich IP holders, so whatever happens, happens, and I'll just have to accept it and move on regardless. Especially if it's not exactly a life-threatening issue.

Thank you so much for sharing, jthrash!
That was even more insightful than I had anticipated. Would you be okay with 'me linking this from somewhere'?

Sure, why not?

How much dying are you going through, 1-10? And what is this meme called?

I'm getting better, but I tried to go on a run today and I couldn't even run 100 feet (30.48 meters for non-Americans) because my lingering cough + my clogged nose made it impossible for me to even breathe properly. Running long-distance until I'm too tired to feel negative emotions for the rest of the day is like the one sure-fire way to calm my anxiety and ensure I don't escalate to posting rants I end up regretting online, so that's immensely disappointing that I'm still too sick for aerobic exercise that ironically soothes me.

So basically, I feel like I'm dying emotionally and spiritually at about an 8 or 9 out of 10. As usual, I have no idea what meme you're supposedly referencing.

@jthrash The spongebob meme in your post

Also, that sounds awful. I wouldn't really recommend running in that state, but if you can walk for a distance, do that. The more you tax your body though, the more you will impair your ability to heal. Also try not to irritate your lungs!

Speaking from experience. I had covid about 5 times in 2020 after I got vaccinated, and it never really went away for the longest time, until I finally broke my foot for the second time that year and was forced to quit running! When my doc on post found out I had been running, she said, "no wonder you've been coughing up a lung!"

Oh. I dunno if there is a specific name for the meme, it's from the Season 1 episode where SpongeBob gets the "suds" though, and it cracked me up in this particular scene where SpongeBob was apparently feeling so "dead" that one of his eyeballs kind of just rolled down his body, all while he's assuring Sandy on the phone that he's fine.

Walking is a good substitute, I guess. The reason I tried running in the first place today was because I wasn't coughing at all beforehand, but then I actually started running up a hill and I coughed harder than if I had been smoking for 25 years straight, so maybe walking would be less likely to trigger the cough. The challenge is that I also have a 5K race coming up that I do every year in late May (Memorial Day), so I hope I only need to take one weekend off to recover faster, because otherwise I might have to cancel the race because I'd lose the stamina to run 3.1 miles if I don't, you know, practice in the weekends leading up to it. Even walking the recommended 10,000+ steps a day doesn't seem to have the mental health benefits of running until I'm too tired to be anxious, though.

Man, running suddenly got hard the moment I turned 30 last year. I was hoping none of this stuff would be an issue until I was in my 40s, particularly because I had been exercising and and eating healthier than average since my teens...

@jthrash Oh dude, I feel that. I turned 30 myself, and I haven't been able to run in a few years now due to that chronically breaking foot bone I mentioned before.

Running used to be my escape. I would run from one city to another when I lived in Cali, back when the military stressed me out to the point of sleeping in my PT uniform and waking up at a pindrop. I would run to our mandatory workouts, run back, and run everywhere else I had to go, to doctor appointments in town and back up the mountain where the base was situated.

All that running broke me down, but it kept the anxiety at bay. When I stopped running, I would wake up in the middle of the night screaming.

I hope you won't have to cancel your race. But if you do, there are worse things than not being able to run in the short term -- like being so sick, you can't sleep. My lungs were raw after running through covid, and it lasted for a few weeks at a time.

I'm a lot more sedentary now, with the same foot issue, but I still enjoy KT taping the crap out of it and going for a long hike with a weighted pack.

I think a lot of runners (or weightlifters) learn the hard way that too much exercise can cause long-term health problems, too. You're hardly the first person to recommend since my late 20s to cool it with the running and walk more instead--apparently, marathon runners develop severe back problems later in life if they don't quit early enough, and I have an uncle (who also served in the military) who had to quit his aerobic escape of choice (bodybuilding) after it basically tore his stomach muscles. Heck, I even had a track coach in high school who was forced to stop running with us (to make sure we weren't slacking off) because his doctor told him not to, taking up biking as a substitute instead, as an early warning sign for me that running is not something we're built to do after a certain point in life.

Nothing emphasizes the saying "everything in moderation" like learning that standing for long periods of time all the time is weirdly similarly-bad for your heart as sitting too much all the time.

Good news is, if worst comes to worst, I can still engage in my other favorite aerobic activity (swimming) in the summer, since that is known as perhaps the least injury-inducing aerobic sport out there. Plus, the silly reason I took up running in the first place is because I wanted to experience the thrill of setting Time Trial records in Sonic games, but irl, so I could at least go back to getting that vicarious thrill of speed so long as SEGA keeps pumping out Sonic games, long after I have to stop running and settle for walking and (ugh) eating even healthier than I already do--you know, to avoid becoming one of those former athletes that gains a ton of weight because I'm no longer burning calories as fast as I'm consuming them.

I'm not sure how much solace this will be to the two of you, but from the perspective of somebody who is "even older than 30", having a body that is "permanently damaged" in one way or another seems to be pretty much unavoidable after a certain age. The only 'same age-acquaintance' I have who's in "good shape" started to go to the gym twice a week to get there. And they have no time for nothing no more.

According the the extended 'amateur medical knowledge' I possess, the best "rehab" activity that comes to mind for the two of you is most likely either swimming (at a speed you're comfortable with) or Aquajogging/water jogging:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquajogging

There might be weekly courses/groups for the latter available in your respective areas for rather cheap/free after paying the entry fee. And there will be lots of "old and feeble" people, so you don't have to worry about "performing the worst" or things along those lines.

Don't forget to disinfect your feet afterwards, or the next thing I will give you 'amateur level medical advice' on will be foot fungus or nail fungus. ;)

I hope this helps, because this is pretty much all I can confidently contribute in this regard.

"Oh, and also... The 'actual reason' I just came to this comment section..." ;)
I did the link I foreshadowed:

Please feel free to contact me here or via PM if you are not comfortable with the way I portrayed you and your words. I can either reword the part or remove the paragraph entirely - no questions asked.
Sorry that I brought this up half a day late. When I was half-asleep at the keyboard I decided "Oh, you know what I should do...?" And here we are.

It's fine, the only thing is that I'm better now, so I'm probably not going to respond to this AMA anymore (since it would take too much time away from my next animation project I want to work on) and replace this blog post with a new one.
